North Andros, Bahamas, December 1999
Here are some photos from my trip to the Bahamas in December 1999. I traveled with Dick Galland, owner/host of Clearwater House, and his son Ben, who also guides for Clearwater. We stayed in Nicholl's Town on North Andros Island three nights, but the main focus of the trip was five days and nights spent on Joulter's Key, a small group of uninhabited islands surrounded by flats. The camp no longer exists, but was recently featured in the Patagonia 2004 Fly Fishing catalog in a photo by Brian O'Keefe. The bonefish were very difficult, especially since this was my first saltwater trip. We saw singles, doubles, small schools, and schools with as many as a 1000 fish! The flats were so extensive that you could frequently see a school approaching from 300 yards or more. As you could imagine, the fish were very spooky. It was very gratifying to hook into a bonefish on Joulters.
