San Juan River, April 2000
Around the first of April 2000, Derek Moffitt, Bjorn Stromsness and I took a road trip to the San Jaun River in New Mexico. It was quite an experience. I'd eagerly recommend the San Juan River to anyone, although I'm not sure whether I'll ever return myself. It's very crowded with anglers, but even more so with fish. You'll find them swimming in the eddy behind your legs. The average fish is about 17" and most of the fish are rainbows. Contrary to popular belief, they don't make a mad dash for the net when hooked. Despite being caught repeatedly, these are some of the hottest trout we'd ever seen. Bring your super-small (size 16-24) nymphs and dries. These fish spend most of their time eating midges.
My drift boat had never been snowed on before! (Somewhere in Arizona)

Here we are at the "Texas Hole." This is the first put in on the river, and we were surprised to discover that most of the guides launch their boats here, fish here all day, and never even drift down stream!

Bjorn Stromsness with an average rainbow from the San Juan. This fish was plucked out of a group of about 500 rising fish (no joke) right off the boat launch at the Texas Hole.

Here I am trying to land a fish in the braids above the Texas Hole. The San Juan is a delightful stream to wade. There is endless opportunity for sight fishing to large trout feeding on small midges.

Our rods rigged up for battle. Notice the nice decor of the rooms at Abe's motel and fly shop. Ha Ha; Abe's!
