| Bahamas / Florida, April 2001 |
| I returned to the Bahamas in 2001 with my friend Mark Tompkins. We fished the island Eleuthera, which is about 110 miles long and 2 miles wide. The people who settled this island named it Eleuthera after the Greek word for freedom. Perhaps they meant "freedom from bonefish!" Okay, okay, we did catch a handful of bonefish, but it just didn't compare to my previous trip to Andros or Mark's bonefishing experience in the Cayman Islands. Our main problem was bad weather. We had several days of very high winds and overcast skies, both of which make for difficult fish spotting. When the conditions were good we only saw a few pathetically small bonefish. We hope our experience was just a fluke, because we found a lot of nice flats with perfect habitat. If you're thinking about heading to Eleuthera I wouldn't steer you away, but talk to me first because I have a lot of ideas on how to make the trip better next time! When we got back to Miami Mark went home and I was joined by my friend Mike Bias. We spent two days fishing for bones and two days with guides fishing for Tarpon. I got a 110 lb tarpon up to the boat, but it broke off before we could get any good pictures. Mike and I jumped several other tarpon. |
